You know, I would like to never discuss the thing again, but I am curious if that changed your models at all. JULIE HYMAN: There is an interesting note out this morning, Michael, from your peers over at Goldman Sachs, who said because we avoided the debt ceiling situation, they sort of ratcheted down their chances of recession this year. So unless bank stress gets worse and a credit crunch is revealed, it's harder to see where that hard landing risk is coming from at present. There's not a major difference from a macro and markets perspective from a mild recession and a soft landing, and I think that's what financial markets are telling you. So we're maybe half as severe as the average recession.Īnd this is, in part, why using the R word sometimes is a little misleading. I think our peak-to-trough decline rounds up to 1%. So for example, a peak-to-trough decline in GDP and closer to 1.5% would be where the average downturn has been. I think- and I define mild as something less severe than the average recession. So does that mean that we'll be in a mild, from your perspective, or a more severe type of recession experience? But yes, we think more likely than not, we will have that correction in the labor market later this year.īRAD SMITH: And so the labor market, usually kind of the last to realize that we're in a recession. But we've been- at the same time, we have to acknowledge where the data flow is, and that's always been in the direction of resilience. We've never really firmly pounded the table on that other than to say, look, we think some correction of imbalances in the labor markets ultimately will be needed to bring inflation down to 2%.Īnd normally, that does look like an NBER-defined recession at some point. But about as strong as we've ever been on that is to say we think it's just more likely than not. MICHAEL GAPEN: I mean, we're still in the mild recession camp later this year. Where are you on that calculus right now, Michael? The backdrop for this, of course, is economic growth, whether we're going to enter recession this year. JULIE HYMAN: Yeah, and as we know, sometimes it's tough with that kind of nuance for the Fed- for anyone, but for the Federal Reserve where there is so much attention on them. So the trick will be, how do you- how do you balance that message next week? Have you seen enough to tell markets you're ready to do more but just not in June? It's a tricky message to deliver. They've been communicating that, hey, maybe we do have a little more work in front of us. It's pretty clear they're starting to lean in that direction.Īs I mentioned, risk's receding a bit. And what we'd like to do is take the opportunity to look around a bit and assess those lags and assess bank stress and see where the economy is going and make a decision if we need to do more. MICHAEL GAPEN: I think that the decision- I mean, it's tough for them right now because they have said, hey, we've done a lot, and we've done a lot fast by historical perspectives. Is the data suggesting, from your perspective, that there needs to be one solid decision or another from the Fed? I don't think there's much of a disconnect, in my opinion.īRAD SMITH: We've been following all of the moves of the CME Fed watch tool in whether or not there will be a rate hike or not at the next meeting. But I think if you're discussing and debating whether equities are on the edge of a bull market, I think that generally means equity prices are reflecting that broader macro backdrop. It's not getting a lot better but it's not getting materially worse.Īnd underneath that, the employment and other spending data show an economy that's generally resilient. It looks like the bank stress situation is in stasis. That's in part because risks have been reduced. I think you're exactly right in terms of the tenor of the discussion around the macro data has improved. Do you think we have a perception gap right now between the actual data and how it's been perceived? But as we were just pointing out, the market is not quite there on re-entering a bull market. You know, whether you take the jobs report or what have you, I guess what's surprising is the tenor and the discussion around the economic data seems to have improved. If the time expires, the other team gets to respond. Each member of the team is given a specific amount of time to respond. School Speech class: Students can use a timer when practing and delivering their speeches. Lectern and Podiums: A speaker, teacher, or professor can track his or her own time with a timer installed on the Lectern or Podium Timer setup and use is so simple that a speaker from out of town can walk up to the lectern, turn the knob to set the time to press start without any instruction. The green and yellow waring times are fully programmable for any desired time.Ĭhurch Sanctuaries and Auditorium: A large LED wall display may be used as a timer to time the minister or guest speaker it may also be used as a time of day clock. The Toastmaster standard green and yellow warning times are programmed into our timers. Not sure what's up, but have seen it discussed online.Toastmasters clubs: use TimeKeeper at their meeting. One other note: I have noticed that the microphone in the Google Home Hub doesn’t appear to pick up voices as well as the Google Home Mini = you have to be much closer in distance to the Hub, than you did with the Mini (where you could be a lot further away in distance). So perhaps the music launcher software has an intermittent problem (and might be the cause of the music alarm issue too?)? Just speculation of course. So I repeated the request, and the 2nd time it confirmed it (like the previous time), and the 2nd time it did actually play the music. I said “Play disco music” (lol), and it said it would (confirmed), but it did not start playing (never launched the music/player). One side note: when I tried to just play some music on the Hub (not an alarm, but just play the music), the 1st time it did not work. At the alarm time, it lights up the Hub, as if it is about to turn the music on, but never triggers the music, so there is NO sound whatsoever, which of course is a big problem for a wake-up alarm. The REGULAR (non-music) alarm now appears to be working regularly again on the Hub, and it also appears to be turning on at the preset volume, which is nice, and not defaulting to the arbitrary (overly loud) 40% anymore, which is good.īut the MUSIC alarm still does not work at all on the Hub, when set WELL ahead of time (night before). Well, the MUSIC alarm works great on the Google Home Mini, but not the Hub. It's loud, too: At less than half volume, the speakers were more than enough to fill a bedroom. Inside the Air are 20-watt stereo speakers with a passive radiator that delivered clear vocals and full, punchy bass. The Air's display shows the time in a stroke of brilliance, the Air's app lets you schedule times for when the display should brighten, dim or even turn off. And there are plenty of other Google Workspace add-ons that can help with building a budget, tracking your finances and more. You could even use them together to really deep dive on your 2023 finances. You can use Sheet’s annual budget track template or the monthly budget tracking template (both of which you can find by selecting File > New > From template gallery, and then navigating to the “Personal” section). Experiment with more robust templates. You can see how much money you’ve got left for that month and whether it’s really worth it to spend on something. You have your smartphone with you all day, anyway, so you can check in with your budget before you make any money-related decisions. The biggest advantage of Google Sheets is that it has a handy mobile phone app that you can use for tracking your daily expenses. It can actually give you meaningful insights and help you realize what you are spending your money on and if there are any areas where you could save some money. Don’t let this discourage you from budgeting. Remember, practice makes perfect! If you don’t have a lot of experience in budgeting, you may not be able to stick to your budget in the first month. No matter how small the amount may be, because small amounts can add up with time and create a big difference. Now, all you have to do is regularly update your budget, after every transaction you make. You can do this for a week, month, year – whatever suits you. You can start by adding the budget you plan for a given period.
Some episodes feature Gruchy explaining how some explosives work, such as grenades and detonation cord, allowing him to draw on his background in the military. Over the years, Gruchy suffered numerous injuries, such as a lacerated ear, a glass shard lodged in his finger, an oil burn and a fractured wrist he jokingly noted that he has suffered more injuries during the filming of the show than during his tour in the Afghanistan war zone. The episodes generally feature Free as the cinematographer and camera operator, and Gruchy, a former ammunition technician corporal in the British Army who served in Afghanistan, as the rigger and often also as the stuntman. The most prominent of the few stains on Free's lab coat is a blue paint smear on the right shoulder " autographed" by a Blue Man. Gruchy's lab coat is the more stained of the two, with Free's coat in fairer condition. Because the original lab coats Free ordered were too small for Gruchy, Gruchy's lab coat tore and has traditionally had a torn off right sleeve. To emphasise the science angle, the pair wear lab coats. The Slow Mo Guys is heavily influenced by Mythbusters in a typical episode, Free and Gruchy attempt to film some sort of natural or physical phenomenon in extreme slow motion: subjects of the filming are often some type of spectacular chemical or physical reaction, stress tests of certain objects under extreme conditions, while some episodes simply aim for an aesthetically pleasing result, often by the use of rainbow-coloured paints. The series consists of a wide variety of things filmed in extreme slow motion using a range of Vision Research Phantom high-speed cameras, capable of shooting over 1,500,000 frames per second. It has been described as the biggest channel for slow motion videos on YouTube. When we went to an East London studio to meet The Slo Mo Guys, we didn't expect to see an entire building full of journalists and camera crews, all there to watch two large balloons filled with paint crashing into each other.īut Gavin Free and Dan Gruchy, who started their channel with a $150,000 high speed camera, are not your average YouTubers. The Slow Mo Guys is a science and technology entertainment web series from Thame, England, created by Gavin Free, starring himself and Daniel Gruchy. Yes, they're just regular guys, but they figured out a way to do mind-blowing videos on a scale that nobody else was doing – and now their YouTube channel is a globally recognised tech and entertainment series. When I started chatting to them about the their videos (and watching some myself in the name of research) I saw why their subscribers have jumped to 7.5 million in two years. Watching the stuff they film is like watching a car crash you can't look away from. "That’s what we like our footage to be like: you want to look away but you can’t," Dan told me later.įrom stretching a condom over Dan's head to literally filming Dan's tonsils as he gargles, their videos really do cover everything you could ever want to see in slow motion, and one or two things you didn't know you wanted to see. "We’ve got weird ones, animal ones, fascinating ones, science ones, disgusting ones, painful ones," says Dan (the latter possibly referring to that condom stretched over his head). What was your inspiration for the slow motion concept? We sat down with them to discuss how they built one of YouTube's most-subscribed channels. It’s like all of this stuff happens right in front of you but you just can’t see it and that’s fascinating to me.ĭG: Yeah, some of the best moments are when you watch back the footage and you go ‘Who knew that that actually happened? Has anyone even seen this before?’ GF: I was just very keen on seeing stuff that you see all the time with your own eye, just in a completely different way. GF: Like every time it rains, and water hits a puddle, you can get like a droplet that will bounce back up out of the puddle and another droplet that will hit it and it makes like little umbrella shapes.
